Greek and Roman Pleasure Buildings : 7 Theatre of Dionysus

Greek and Roman Pleasure Buildings : 7 Theatre of Dionysus

The origins of this theatre are somewhat obscure, but the earliest parts date from circa 500 B.C.. No raised stage is found in the theatre of Dionysus and players performed in the orchestra with a backcloth formed by buildings of the Temple of Dionysus to whom the plays were offered. Any scenery used would have been of timber and the actors entered by ramps (parodoi) either side of the orchestra.
